North High School Skylight Installation

North High School :
North HS Renovation Project
Adolfson and Peterson Construction General Contractors
Klipp / Humphries Poli Architects

Project construction began in December 2009 and was complete July 2010. Work included renovating the Main building of the historic North High School. The 1911 building renovations included constructing a new central utility plant, updating the HVAC system and school skylight installation in the 1959 main building.

Care was taken in the design and construction of this historic landmark to insure any changes to the structure would be confirmed by the Historical Society and not interfere with the exterior visual “look” of the building.

What We Did:

  • Installation of (2) 14′ x 24′ extended pyramid skylights on site built treated lumber curbs.
  • Installation of (5) 8′ x 12′ single sloped skylights on site built treated lumber curbs.
  • (6) Wasco 4896  self flashed skylights mounted on wood nailers.
  • Work included removing the old wire glass skylights and modifying the curbs to support the new skylight installations.

Product Used:

  • Wasco DDCA 4896 Clear over White Modified Impact Acrylic Self-Flashed Skylights w/ Bronze anodized finish
  • CPI Daylighting Model ESP-FRDG4 14.00′ wide x 24.00′ Extended Pyramid Skylight, 4″ Quadwall Glazing.
  • CPI Daylighting Model ESP-PSLP4 8.00′ wide x 12.00′ Single Slope, 4″ Quadwall Glazing.

Results:

  • Modified Historical building to bring natural daylight into the interior of the hallways and various classrooms.
  • The school skylight installation added natural daylight which reduces the use of electrical lighting during daylight hours.
  • Soft Translucent natural daylight accents the original architectural decor of the school.

Benefits:

  • Correct the daylighting and solar heat levels required for the space.
  • Reduce dependence on electric lighting—increase energy savings.
  • The owners love the energy savings provided by the new skylights.
  • Increase the facility’s property value.
  • Healthy, natural daylight in the space with soft translucent light and accurate color rendition.
  • No required maintenance or re-coating costs—individual exterior panels  are easily replaced.
  • In classroom environments, increased daylighting has been shown to increase students performance.
