Translucent Daylighting Installed at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School for LEED Gold Certification
Construction recently finished on the new Rocky Mountain Deaf School in Jefferson County, Colorado. They were approved for a $13 million grant from the BEST (Building Excellent Schools Today) Program through the Colorado Department of Education to build a new school specifically designed with and for deaf and hard of hearing students. The new school will provide up-to-date technology and a deaf space building, designed to prepare each deaf student to be literate, academically successful, and a lifelong learner.
Building Design
The design of the facility will accommodate technology appropriate for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing children, safe and efficient traffic flow, and energy efficient and green building technologies.
We provided the architect the solution for getting daylighting into the classrooms without using traditional skylights. We also built and supplied a mock-up for the architect and subcontractors to ease the installation process for everyone.
You can fix it now on the drafting board with an eraser or you can fix it later on the construction site with a sledge hammer.
LEED Gold Certification
The scope of this project will consist of a 10 acre parcel of land and the construction of a 46,107 square foot building with the goal of achieving LEED Gold Certification. The building will consist of separate classrooms for students in Pre-K through 12th grade and will provide a safe and healthy learning environment. Additional rooms will include:
- American Sign Language Lab/Classroom
- Science Lab
- Science Classroom
- Art Room with Storage
- Family and Consumer Science Classroom
- Spoken Language Program Room
- Reading Specialist and American Sign Language Offices
- Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy Room
- Nurse/Treatment Room with Restroom
- Administrative Offices with Conference Room and Storage
- Cafetorium
- Kitchen with Storage and Toilet
- Library with Video Production Room and AV Equipment Storage
- Gymnasium with Storage
- Boys and Girls Locker Rooms
- Facility Maintenance Office with Toilet and Custodial Storage Closets
